Vaikka Placebo perui eikä Museen hellinnyt permantolippua, kuulostaa keikkarintamalla suotuisalta. Elämäni ensimmäinen stadionkonsertti koittaa jälkimmäisen mainitun brittirockin suuruuden myötä heinäkuussa, ja lisäksi kesäisen Suomen vierailijoiksi ovat varmistuneet Sigur Rós (Ilosaarirock) sekä Blur (Provinssirock). Jiihaa!
Tänään sain myös napattua viimeiset liput Tiketistä Anneke van Giersbergenin ja Anathema-mies Danny Cavanaghin akustiselle keikalle tammikuulle. Jostain syystä tieto keikasta oli vilahtanut ohi silmieni, mutta onneksi heräsin edes nyt. Ja vaikka alla oleva video on täälläkin jo pariin otteeseen nähty, ei se vanhene koskaan.
Although Placebo cancelled and I didn't get a standing ticket to last week's Muse concert, life doesn't seem so bad gig-wise. I'll be heading to the olympic stadium for the first time in my life because of that latter great British rock band, and also two very welcome guests are playing at Finnish festivals next summer: SigurRós and Blur. Yay!! Today I also managed to get the last remaining tickets to Anneke van Giersbergen's & Danny Cavanagh's (Anathema) acoustic show in January. Somehow I'd missed all information about the gig, but luckily I still got tickets. And yes, the video above has been seen in this blog at least a couple of times already, but it just never gets old...

Eva & Manu have made a great cover of The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy". I've heard it a few times on their gigs and now also as an album version because it's in Eva & Manu's debut album that was released this Friday. I also heard the original version by The Black Keys live at this year's Flow festival. So great! First Aid Kitin versio Fever Rayn biisistä When I Grow Up on loistava! Olen kuunnellut sitä viime aikoina hyvin paljon. Minua houkuttaa ihan hirveästi lähteä Ilosaarirockiin katsomaan noita nuoria lahjakkaita neitosia.
First Aid Kit's cover version of Fever Ray's song "When I Grow Up" is amazing! I'v been listening to it a lot lately. I am so tempted to go see them live this summer at Ilosaarirock.

luoma taidekollektiivi, joka lähti pienestä itseilmaisun tarpeesta ja on kasvanut kokonaiseksi tuotantoyhtiöksi. Kuten nimestä - hit the record
button - voi päätellä, musiikki ja videointi ovat suuressa roolissa
konseptissa, mutta tarkkoja rajoja ei ole ja recordeiksi,
nauhoituksiksi, kutsutaan myös valokuvia, kuvituksia sekä kirjoitettuja tarinoita. Gordon-Levitt on yhtä kuin RegularJOE,
tiimin johtohahmo, joka itsekin tuottaa esimerkiksi musiikkia melko
ahkerasti ja järjestää aiheeseen liittyviä tapahtumia ympäri maata.
Kollektiiviin voi liittyä kuka tahansa - kunhan on valmis antamaan omat
työnsä myös remixattaviksi, sillä se kuuluu asian luonteeseen.
Esimerkiksi viime viikolla huudeltiin leikkaajien ja animaattoreiden perään. Mahdolliset voitot jaetaan 50/50 yhtiön ja artistin kesken.

on ensimmäinen varsinainen kokoelma recordeja, johon panoksensa on
antanut 471 eri tahoa. Kirjan lisäksi paketissa tulee mukana CD'llinen
musiikkia ja DVD'llinen lyhytelokuvia ja animaatioita. Nopean tilaajan
etuna sai vielä erillisen punaisen seiskatuumaisen kaupan päälle, täynnä biisejä tietty. Nettikaupasta löytyy myös hauskoilla printeillä varustettuja t-paitoja ja muuta mukavaa, jos aihe kiinnostaa ja sitä haluaa kannattaa. :)
This is a bit embarrassing. I've been meaning to write about hitRECord for over a year now, but just haven't gotten to it. Until now. Sorry I'm late.
So, hitRECordis an art collective, sort of, created by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (also known as an actor). It started from a small interest to get a bit artsy and has grown into a whole production company. As the name depicts, it's all about recordings - music, video, animation, but in fact drawings, paintings and photographs are called recordings, too. Gordon-Levitt is RegularJOE. He both runs the company and makes music himself. He also organizes supportive galas all around the US. Anyone can join the collaborative company, as long as you're ready to give your art remixed by others, as that's part of the idea. For example last week animators and editors were wanted for a small film project. Any profits will be shared 50/50 between the company and the artist.
RECollection vol. 1 is the first actual compilation of records and holds music, short films, stories and illustrations from 471 different artists. The book comes with a CD, DVD and because of being an early bird I also got a spicy red 7" full of tunes. From the web store you can also find funny t-shirts and other stuff, if you're interested and want to support hitRECord. :)

Nimittäin biisilista vuodelle 2011 on valmis. Sitä on kasattu yhtäaikaa kiireellä ja hartaudella, ja kuten raitamäärästä voi päätellä, mukana on muitakin kuin ns. parhaita kappaleita. Hyviä kuitenkin kaikki tyynni!
Lisäksi Zooey Deschanel ja Joseph Gordon-Levitt ovat coveroineet Nancy Wilsonin biisiä uuden vuoden kunniaksi. Olisiko tästä useamman vuoden ystävinä olleesta parista seuraavaksi Gibbard/Deschanel-komboksi? En tiedä, mutta suloisuudella ei näytä olevan rajoja.
Näiden myötä Alice & June kiittää menneestä vuodesta, kilistelee kultahippusampanjaa täynnä olevia lasejaan ja toivottaa kaikille entistä upeampaa vuotta 2012! :)

On hauskaa huomata, miten tietyt klassikot jaksavat viehättää muitakin artisteja vuodesta toiseen. Cover-listoja kootessani olen törmännyt yhä uudestaan The Smithsin, Depeche Moden, Nirvanan, Joy Divisionin ja Elviksen kappaleiden versiointeihin. Vai mitä sanotte siitä, että tämä biisi löytyy nyt kaikilta kolmelta cover-playlistiltani? Eikä yksikään versio ole samanlainen tai alkuperäinen, obviously.

Does anybody else miss Damien Rice? There's no sign of a new album but thankfully Damien has been featuring in other people's albums this year. Damien sings two duets with Mélanie Laurent in her debut album "En t'attendant" and features on one song in Lamb's new album "5". In addition to these the October 25 edition of Q Magazines has a compilation cd of U2 covers and Damien Rice covers the song "One" stunningly. Youtube is filled with unreleased songs by Damien so please please please dear mr. Rice would you release a new album?!
June poikkesi Suomi-viikosta ja niin teen minäkin, koska kyseessä on The National. Voiko The National tehdä huonoa biisiä? Ei. The Philistines Jr. cover Twenty Miles To NH Part 2 kuulostaa loistavalta ja saa heti hymyn huulille.

The National has made a really great cover of The Philistines Jr's song "Twenty Miles To NH". After writing this I noticed that June had gone and added this same song to her previous post :D But hey, you can never write too much about The National, right?!
Pakko poiketa Suomi-viikosta ihan pikkuisen: megayhtye U2'n ikoninen Achtung Baby -levy täyttää ensi kuussa kunnioitettavat kaksikymmentä vuotta. Syntymäpäivän kunniaksi Q Magazine julkaisee joulukuun numeronsa kylkiäisenä samaisen levyn cover-versiona, ja biisejä uusiksi vetämään on saatu kohtuullinen kasa maineikkaita nimiä. Kappaleet on jo saatu ulos tuutista, ja hyvältä kuulostaa! Vaikka en ole millään tasolla U2-fani (parin biisin upeus ei riitä kantamaan bändin koko tuotantoa), vaikuttaa cover-lätty harvinaisen kiinnostavalta.
Yritin valita lemppariversiointeja, mutta kaikki ovat sen verran kutkuttavia, etten pysty! Ainakin Damien Rice, NIN ja Depparit ovat onnistuneet loistavasti, samoin Patti Smith, Snow Patrol, Garbage, Glasvegas...

U2's iconic album Achtung Baby celebrates its 20th birthday this year. In honour of the megaband, Q Magazine is releasing a free cover CD with its December issue. On the album is the whole U2 record performed by other artists. And the songs are already out, check the links! Although I'm not a U2 fan in any way (a couple of songs are brilliant, but that's it), the tracks sound pretty amazing. Especially ones by Damien Rice and NIN and Depeche Mode and Glasvegas and... I can't pick any favourites! They all sound great.
Manicsien uusin single on cover The The'n biisistä This Is The Day. Kappaleesta puuttuu bändin alkuaikojen angsti, mikä sinänsä oli odotettavaakin viime vuosien julkaisujen perusteella, mutta James Dean Bradfield vetää silti korkealta ja kovaa. Letkeän menon lomasta heijastuu haikeus - onko se sitten musiikista itsestään vai tietynlaisen aikakauden loppumisesta johtuvaa, en tiedä. Video sai joka tapauksessa tipan silmään.
The Manic Street Preachers' new single is actually a cover from The The's song This Is The Day. It's mellow, without the angst that's so essential to the band's earlier years. And in certain ways it's also sad - simply because of the music or the fact that it ends an era, I don't know. But anyhow, the video surely brought tears to my eyes.
Maailmasta löytyy niin paljon hyviä lauluja, että kaikki haluavat tehdä niistä omia versioitansa. Mikäs siinä, monesti coverit ovat vieläpä parempia kuin alkuperäiset! Kokosin kaksi cover-playlistia niitä himoitseville (ja itselleni obviously). Kolmas on tekeillä ja julkaistaan sitten, kun siinäkin on 20 biisiä täynnä.
