Placebo - Song to Say Goodbye

Alice & June olivat ensimmäisellä yhteisellä ulkomaan keikkamatkallaan vuonna 2006. Keikkakohde oli Lontoon Wembley Arena, bändinä suuren rakkautemme kohde Placebo.

Nyt, viisi ja puoli vuotta myöhemmin, paikka on vaihtunut O2-kompleksin pieneen saliin. Kaupunki on sama, ja mikä tärkeintä - bändi on sama. Because true love never dies.

Toiset juhlivat vappua, me juhlimme Placeboa!

Alice's & June's first gig trip abroad together was in 2006. The target was London's Wembley Arena and our big love Placebo.

Now, five and a half years later, the venue has changed into IndigO2. The city is the same and what's most important - the band is the same. Because true love never dies.

Coming Up For Air

Placebo julkaisi viime lokakuussa We Come In Pieces -live-DVD'n. Spessu- ja Blu-Ray-versioilta löytyy lisäksi Coming Up For Air -dokumentti, joka on kuvattu Battle For The Sun -levyn kiertueella pari vuotta takaperin. Itse biisit ovat Lontoon Brixton Academyn keikalta vuoden 2010 syyskuulta. DVD'tä katsoessa ei voi kuin ajatella, voi kunpa olisi päässyt sinne!! Keikka on nimittäin hienoa katseltavaa, vaikka verrattuna eeppiseen Pariisin vuoden 2003 konserttiin (Soulmates Never Die) jotain jääkin uupumaan. Toisaalta, eipä näitä saisi edes verrata.

Eteerinen, hyvin paljon tuosta edellisen livetaltioinnin Sleeping With Ghosts -dokkarista eroava dokumenttifilmi näytetään isolta valkokankaalta ensimmäistä kertaa lauantaina 28.4. Lontoon O2'ssa, muutamaa tuntia ennen Placebon samaisessa paikassa alkavaa keikkaa. Dokumentin jälkeen on pieni Q&A-osio bändin ja dokkarin ohjaajan kanssa. Tällä kertaa taitaa näiltä tytöiltä jäädä itse keikan eturivin jonottaminen väliin, sillä mainittuun screeningiin tuli sitten hankittua liput. ;) Eipä haittaa! Vanhoina ja raihnaisina taidamme muutenkin mieluummin pogoilla sydämiemme kyllyydestä jossain keskellä permantoa, kuin hengailla jännityspaniikissa koko päivää viihdekompleksissa ja todennäköisesti kuitenkin menettää se eturivin paikka. Koitetaan sitten syyskuussa uudelleen Helsingissä.

Placebo released a live DVD, We Come In Pieces, last October. On the special and blu-ray versions of the film is also a document called Coming Up For Air. Both the document and the concert were filmed during the Battle For The Sun tour, the actual songs at Brixton Academy in September 2010. Oh how I wish I could've been there! Although maybe something is missing compared to the epic Soulmates Never Die DVD (shot in Paris 2003). Or let's say, something's different. I really like this new one nevertheless.


Anyhow, the new document is being screened for the first time in O2 in April, just hours before Placebo's gig starts at the IndidO2. We were supposed to queue the whole day to get front row placings at the gig, but instead I just had to get tickets to the screening - there's an Q&A with the band and the director afterwards!! Whoah. So let's think about that first row thing again in Helsinki...

Whitney Houston 1963 - 2012

Näyttelijäpuolella lapsuuden idoleista aivan liian moni on jo siirtynyt niin sanotusti vehreämmille maille. Musiikkimaailmassa taas suurin osa menehtyneistä artiseista on sellaisia, joista olen kiinnostunut vasta heidän kuolemansa jälkeen. Tänä aamuna silmille välähti yllättävä tieto Whitney Houstonin kuolemasta. Pitkään päihdeongelmien kanssa kamppailleella diivalla oli paikkansa sydämessäni, kiitos ala-asteaikaisen fanituksen, vaikka leidiä en moneen vuoteen olekaan kuunnellut ripaustakaan. RIP Whitney, tässä yksi parhaistasi.

Soul diva Whitney Houston has passed away. I haven't listened to her for ages, but almost 20 years ago I was a huge fan. RIP Whitney, here's one of your finest.

Wolf Gang @ Nosturi

Hey! Joulu ohi, massut täynnä herkkuja - aika kerrata kerääntynyttä saldoa. Käymme Reiskan kanssa myöhemmin tällä viikolla läpi vuoden parasta julkaistua ja esitettyä musiikkia, mutta ensin näitä keikkoja vähän alta pois. Huomenna luvassa Satellite Storiesia sekä Patrick Wolfia. Tänään jokunen sananen Wolf Gangin parin viikon takaiselta keikalta on paikallaan, vaikka Nosturin tiukat säännöt kielsivätkin järkkärillä kuvaamisen, ja fotot loistavat siksi poissaolollaan (muistini mukaan otin kuvia kyllä puhelimella, mutta niin...).

Ehkä sunnuntai-ilta ei ollut se paras mahdollinen ajankohta keikalle, sillä sali huusi tyhjyyttään. BWR kyllä yritti lämmittelyllään saada yleisöä mukaan, mutta kun suurin osa porukasta (eturiviä lukuun ottamatta) päätti palloilla enimmäkseen salin takaosan anniskelualueella, ei tiivistä tunnelmaa päässyt syntymään. Brittiläisen Wolf Gangin aikana yleisö sentäs vähän heräili koomastaan - vaikka silloinkin sali oli puoliksi tyhjillään.

Bändiä se ei kuitenkaan tuntunut haittaavan - he vetivät iloisella meiningillä koko setin läpi ja yleisö tanssahteli mukana. Yhden levyn julkaisseella artistilla (lavalla on toki useampia muusikoita) ei biisejä kovin pitkälle riitä, mutta levyn raitoja täydennettiin parilla uudella vedolla. Kivaa! Jälkeenpäin Max McElligott hengaili Nosturin aulassa hetken jutellen niitä näitä, jolloin kamerallekin tuli sentäs käyttöä.

Rattoisa ilta kaiken kaikkiaan. Tunnelman olisi toki toivonut olevan vielä enemmän nosteessa, mutta kuten sanoin, se ei ollut lavameiningistä kiinni. Toivottavasti ensi kerralla bändi pääsisi Tavastialle, ja isompi joukko ihmisiä saapuisi jammailemaan pop-rallien tahdissa. :)

Christmas is over and everyone's feeling a big bloated, right? Alice and I will later this week sum up the year by listing the best recorded and live music of 2011, but first some gig reports that have been waiting forever. Tomorrow Satellite Stories and Patrick Wolf, today Wolf Gang.

Nosturi has a very strict policy about filming with DSLR's, so no photos from the gig a couple of weeks ago could be taken. Nevertheless, the gig itself was enjoyable! Even though there were too few people at the club. But that didn't seem to bother the band, who added a couple of new songs to their setlist (you can't play all that long when you've released only one album so far) and made the crowd dance anyway. And afterwards Max McElligott came to talk with the fans for a bit. I hope next time the gig would be at Tavastia, with a bit bigger audience! 'Cause there's absolutely nothing wrong with the tunes. :)

Manboy

Blogiani tai elämääni muuten vaan seuranneet tietävät, että kotimaisista rokkipumpuista yksi on ylitse muiden - Manboy. Helsinkiläistyneet porilaiset nousivat tietoisuuteeni ensi kerran debyyttilevy Stretch Your Religionin myötä yli kymmenen vuotta sitten ja ovat kokoajan vahvistaneet asemaansa paitsi omassa sydämessäni, myös maailmalla. Bändi on lämpännyt useampaa kansainvälistä artistia enkä ole koskaan ymmärtänyt, miten he eivät ole nykyistä suurempi nimi. Ehkä suomalaiset eivät vain tajua? Onneksi uusi levy, Prince-lämmittely sekä hieno, kunniamaininnan saanut How It Hurts -musiikkivideo ovat saaneet huomiota osakseen.

Muutamia olen saanut käännytettyä mänkkärifaneiksi (tai no, ainakin kuuntelijoiksi), ja keikoillekin löytyy yleensä seuraa. Livenä bändi on ehdottomasti parhaimmillaan, joten jos mahdollisuus sen kokemiseen tulee, kannattaa siihen tarttua tiukasti!

Manboy is my all-time favourite Finnish band. I don't understand why they're not bigger than they are! With their music they should be international rock gods or something. I don't get it. Anyway, I've liked them for over ten years now, and they're definitely in their element on stage. Manboy has also opened up for quite big bands over the years - Placebo, Suede, Muse and recently Hurts. So here are some pics taken during the last ten years, from all over Finland!

And yes, the new album has more electro elements in it than the previous ones, but you should check all of them out anyway. And the new video for How It Hurts is absolutely worth watching, too.

Tori Amos ABC

Aikaa Torin Night of Hunters -kiertueen aloittavaan Suomen keikkaan on tasan viikko. Se viikko kuluu musiikillisesti täällä Torin laajan tuotannon parissa. Tein aakkossoittolistan lempibiiseistäni, koska soittolistan tekeminen vain sillä perusteella, että siinä olisi lempibiisejäni olisi melkein mahdotonta. Se tulisi sisältämään varmasti sata. Tämänkin listan tekeminen oli työn ja tuskan takana, vaikeita valintoja. Kirjaimista vaikeimpia olivat etenkin B, C, I ja S. Coverit ja Night of Hunters -levyn biisit on jätetty tämän listan ulkopuolelle. Onneksi aivan kaikille aakkosille ei Torilta löydy biisejä ja suomen kielessä on enemmän aakkosia kuin englannissa, joten saatoin sisällyttää listaan samalla aakkosella alkavia biisejä hieman enemmän. It's exactly a week until Tori starts her Night of Hunters -tour  from Finland. Thought I'd do an alphabetical Tori Amos - playlist because well.. a playlist without some restrictions would be impossible to make if I'd want it to include my favorites. It would have like a hundred songs. It was hard enough to make this, to choose just one song for each alphabet. Especially B, C, I and S were very hard. Covers and songs from the new "Night of Hunters" have been left outside of this playlist. But luckily I had a little loophole since Tori hasn't made songs beginning in certain alphabets, and in Finnish we have a few more compared to English, so in their place are additional songs so to speak. Tein sen!! Nimittäin kokosin kolmekymmentä Musen kappaletta paremmuusjärjestykseen. Ei ollut helppoa ei, ja sen vuoksi projektiin upposikin useampi viikko. Mutta rajansa pilkunviilauksellakin.

Prosessia helpottaakseni kaikki coverit, akustiset ja liveversiot jätin huomioimatta heti alkuunsa. Samoin joitakin yllättäviä valintoja tippui pois, kuten ihka ensimmäinen Muse-suosikkini (Sunburn), yksi kivoimmista biiseistä itse soittaa (Falling Down) ja jostain syystä loistavasta meiningistään huolimatta hivenen ärsyttävä kipale (Time Is Running Out). Jos Soaked olisi julkaistu muidenkin kuin Adam Lambertin toimesta, se löytyisi listalta.

Osa biiseistä on mukana loistavan rumpukompin, osa Bellamyn falsetin, osa uppoavien lyriikoiden ja osa muistojen vuoksi. Ja sitten on niitä täydellisyyteen yltäviä paketteja joissa yhdistyy kaikki (kuten numero yksi). Tällaisista listoista tulee pakosti henkilökohtaisia juuri tuolla 'en voi jättää tätä pois' -kriteerillä. Siksi valinnat voivat olla outoja, mutta kaikista saa kysymykset ja valitukset esittää allekirjoittaneelle.

Olen yllättävän tyytyväinen listaan, etenkin kärkikymmenikköön. Osittain järjestys heitteli kuperkeikkaa kasaamisen aikana, joten kiveen en sitä hakkaisi, vaikka sijat 1-4 ovatkin jokseenkin sataprosenttisesti aina samoja. Kuvaa klikkaamalla Spotifyhin! Muistakaa jälleen käänteinen järjestys.

I did it!! Made a Muse top30 playlist. Phew. It certainly wasn't easy and I had to leave out lots of great songs for different reasons. I still wouldn't say that the list is one hundred percent accurate, although the first four songs are probably always the same. Especially the first one ♥ It has the perfect riff, lyrics and falsetto, not to mention all the memories it comes with. These kind of playlists always become very personal because you just can't leave certain songs out, even though they aren't as good as some other ones. But if they have personal meaning, they stay on the list. Period.

Manics TOP20

Jatketaan tällä aiheella vielä ihan vähän... Miia ja muutama muukin juhlistivat viime viikon Manics-vierailua kokoamalla top-listan bändin hienoimmista tuotoksista. En voinut vastustaa kiusausta minäkään, vaikka listan tekeminen tietysti aiheuttikin jälleen kerran harmaita hiuksia. Esimerkiksi  solidaarisuuden vuoksi himoitsin suuresti sitä, että jokaiselta levyltä olisi jotain mukana. Vaikka kaikilta pitkäsoitoilta helmiä löytyykin (tai siis superhelmiä muiden helmien joukosta), lista rakentui lopulta karsimisvaiheessa näin. Pois jäivät jopa Autumnsong, La Tristesse Durera sekä Everything Must Go, omg! Älkää teilatko!

Listaa ei pidä ottaa lopullisena totuutena, vaikka kärkiviisikko onkin aika selvää kauraa. Ja huomioittehan käänteisen järjestyksen - paras viimeisenä ;)
